Department of Sociology

Our Photo Competition 2024 is now open to entries on the theme of the sociology of hope.

Entrants are invited to think about – and capture in a photo – hope in the world around us.

What are some of the big or small ways that hope manifests in the face of social problems such as inequality and/or conflict? What might be causing this hope? How, if at all, might it challenge inequity or alleviate suffering?

In a sociological sense, "hope" can point us to opportunities for tackling injustice, and show us how positive assets within societies and communities - such as inclusion, equality, dignity and human rights - can be nurtured.

The first prize is £100 for the student, £100 for the school and an invitation to visit the University of Cambridge. The winning photos will be displayed on the Department of Sociology website.

The competition is open to all GCSE and A-Level (or equivalent i.e. International Baccalaureate) students in the UK and abroad.

Entries will be judged by a panel from the University of Cambridge and results will be announced in early June. The judges will assess the photos and accompanying text on their interpretation of the theme, originality and creativity.

How to enter:

Please use this form to upload your photograph, its title and a short paragraph explaining the ideas it represents by 6th May 2024.
