We welcome enquiries from researchers of all career stages, who wish to apply for a fellowship or a grant funded by UKRI, the Leverhulme, the British Academy, the Wellcome Trust, or other funding bodies.
Applications from early career researchers are particularly welcome. We want to help those at the start of their career to launch their own projects and become independent researchers.
Scholars who will bring new perspectives to sociological research in Cambridge are also encouraged to apply.
How to apply
We encourage prospective external and internal applicants to contact the Sociology Research Grants Administrator as early as possible. We recommend at least 2 months’ notice before the fellowship or grant deadline.
Some fellowships require a Department selection process before proceeding to the funder. This applies when the Department is the lead institution, or where they are a collaborator.
These applicants will need a member of Academic Staff from within the Department to act as a sponsor. Applications also need Head of Department approval and an appropriate ethics and risk assessment.
Application essentials
- Identify the funding opportunity. The UKRI ‘Funding finder’ is a great starting point.
- Contact a potential Academic Staff sponsor to discuss your research project 2-4 months before the deadline.
- Email the Research Grants Administrator to discuss eligibility, costings and timescales, 2-4 months before the deadline.
- Complete a Head of Department approval form
- Submit your application, including your ethics and risk assessment, to the Department for approval at least 7 working days before the funder deadline.
- If the Head of Department approves your application, it will be sent to the Cambridge Research Operations Office for further approval before submission to the funder.
- If your application is successful, your project will be hosted by the Department and will benefit from our unique interdisciplinary research environment.
