Department of Sociology

"The best thing about my PhD is that I am doing research on a topic I chose myself, surrounded by an incredible group of researchers, with a fantastic supervisor."

In 2015 when I was choosing what to do my masters on and where, I came across the MPhil in the Sociology of Reproduction. The programme was unique to HSPS at Cambridge, thus I set my heart on joining the Sociology of Reproduction Research Group (ReproSoc).

I did my BA in Sociology and thoroughly loved it, I cannot think of another discipline I would rather be part of. The scope of Sociology is endless and I never cease to be fascinated hence I remain a student of Sociology as a PhD candidate.

The best thing about my PhD is that I am doing research on a topic I chose myself, surrounded by an incredible group of researchers, with a fantastic supervisor. I enjoy reading around my topic and pulling ideas and arguments on it together.

Applying to graduate studies in Sociology at the University of Cambridge is a layered process with lots of waiting but it is worth it in the end. There are times when the process can be frustrating, particularly if you are waiting for documentation to be approved during the summer. I would strongly advise reading the guidelines about what documentation is acceptable for proving marks and classifications of degrees as graduate admissions are a stickler for this.

Inductions to graduate programmes in the department are full of lots of information, some of which may not initially make much sense. However, as you settle in understanding the system gets easier and there is always plenty of support to guide you through.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to track me or another student in the department down, we are all very friendly and always happy to answer queries about graduate life and the department: (askastudent@sociology.cam.ac.uk - and ask for Amarpreet!)
