Prospective Graduates

The Department of Sociology offers two graduate courses, the MPhil in Sociology and the PhD in Sociology.

It has a lively community of about 85 PhD and up to 30 MPhil students. Graduate students have access to in-house computing facilities and a spacious social area with kitchens. PhD students can work in a dedicated spacious study area adjacent to the social area. The specialised SPS Library (Sociology, Land Economy) is housed close by.

The Department offers lectures, seminars (with invited speakers) and participation in research clusters in a wide range of sociological subjects.

The MPhil

The MPhil in Sociology offers a world-class programme of postgraduate study. It's organised into four different pathways to give students the opportunity to study selected sociological subjects in depth.

9 months full-time

The PhD

The PhD in Sociology offers a world-class programme of research study supervised by world renowned experts in their fields. PhD candidates do nine terms (three years) of research and one year of writing up the thesis. The PhD can also be studied part-time.

3 years full-time; 5 years part-time
