MPhil in Sociology

A world-class programme of postgraduate study

This part-taught, part-research degree culminates in a Master's dissertation. Students apply to one of 3 different pathways and develop expertise in a particular area of Sociology. 

This course develops your analytical and writing abilities to your full potential.  By maintaining a close relationship between teaching and research we offer an education which reflects developments in your chosen discipline.

We welcome applications from intellectually outstanding students with a degree in a social science or a related field.  

As an MPhil student you will: 

  • study recent social change and current research at an advanced level
  • gain in-depth knowledge of sociological theory and research methods
  • be taught by acknowledged authorities in your chosen field
  • have access to outstanding resources available across the University of Cambridge
  • apply modern social theories to substantive research topics
  • finish the course equipped for doctoral or professional research contexts 

Course format 

The degree is 9 months full-time study, or 21 months part-time. Around 55 students are enrolled each year. 

Part-time students are expected to be in Cambridge for around 45 days per year, spread throughout the year, for lectures, supervisions and other training.  

As a part-time MPhil student, in your first year you will complete core-course sessions and the Field Review Essay and in the second year you will write your dissertation.

International students  

Students who require a student visa to study in the UK should apply for the full-time programme. The University only sponsors student visas for the part time option if the student has a disability that requires them to study part-time.

MPhil in Health, Medicine and Society

The MPhil in Health, Medicine and Society offers a uniquely multi-disciplinary approach to teaching and research, combining world class faculty with outstanding institutional resources. 

It is designed to provide you with combined advanced skills in the social, ethical and historical analysis of health and medicine.

This 9 month course is a collaborative initiative between the Departments of History and Philosophy of Science, Social Anthropology and Sociology.
