Planetary Praxis

Planetary Praxis is a research group focusing on social, digital and environmental justice through practice-based investigations informed by social theory and science and technology studies.

By focusing on planetary problems, from climate change and deforestation to air pollution, we consider how technological approaches to observing and managing these problems influence social life, and how they facilitate or limit democratic engagement and equity.

Our research has included investigating smart environments, spanning cities and forests as they become increasingly digital; co-creating a community-based landscape regeneration toolkit; working with communities to monitor air pollution with digital sensors and sensor toolkits; and studying how citizen data influences or challenges environmental decision-making. PhD student research aligns with these topics, focusing on nature restoration digital platforms, ecological action and community gardens, environmental serious games, and citizen monitoring of oil spills, among related topics.

Jennifer Gabrys leads the research group, and its members include Noel Chung, David Brown, Emanuèle Rielbage, Caleb Yunis Lizana, Rafael Barrio de Mendoza Zevallos, and Felipe Araneda Avila.
