Department of Sociology

Each year the Department of Sociology at the University of Cambridge hosts a photography competition aimed at students in Years 10, 11 and 12.

Students are invited to enter one photograph and an accompanying paragraph that explains how the photo interprets the theme, which this year is "Sociology of Change".

The competition is judged by a panel of lecturers from the Department of Sociology, who will assess the photos and accompanying paragraph based on their creative interpretation of the theme, originality and sociological imagination.

The winning student will receive £100 for themselves and £100 for their school, and the winning photo will be displayed both in the Department of Sociology and on our website.

The theme:

As we enter a new decade, many dramatic changes sit on the horizon. Students are encouraged to be creative in their interpretation of the theme "Sociology of Change", and think about what changes are happening in the social world and what their causes and effects might be. These could be social, political, technological, cultural, environmental or a combination. Entries can focus on the personal or broader social level, or even attempt to draw links between the two.

The rules:

  • Entry is limited to one photograph per person (who must be a student in Y10, 11, 12 or equivalent).
  • The photograph must be taken by the student and cannot be a pre-existing image.
  • Students should not seek assistance with their submission to the extent that it is no longer their own work.
  • Photographs must not feature recognisable brands or advertising.
  • Permission must be sought for photos that include identifiable people. If these people are aged 18 or under, parental permission is also required. We will contact shortlisted entries that fall in this category.
  • By entering the competition, students acknowledge that their photographs may be used in a selection of marketing and publicity material by the Sociology Department.
  • Entries received after the deadline (Fri 24 April 2020) will not be considered. The judges' decision is final.

Making an entry:

Students can use the webform below to submit their photograph and a paragraph (100-250 words max) to explain how the photo interprets the theme before Fri 24 April 2020. Any questions can be directed to

Results will be announced on our website in May 2020. To be the first to hear about the winning entries, join the Department of Sociology outreach mailing list.

In accordance with Government advice about the coronavirus pandemic, we recommend students either take photos within their home, or use images they had previously taken for their competition entry.
