About

Nadia Chu is a PhD student at the Department of Sociology, University of Cambridge. She holds a Master's degree of Social Sciences in Media, Culture and Creative Cities from the University of Hong Kong (HKU). Following her graduation, she embarked on a professional journey as a Research Assistant at the Department of Sociology, HKU, where she honed her skills in conducting qualitative research and actively participated in community engagement projects.

Nadia's research interests are cultural sociology, urban sociology, and the sociology of space. Currently, her research focuses on investigating the revitalisation of Chinese opera in mainland China and Hong Kong from a historical and institutional comparative perspective.

Nadia's Doctoral Project: A Comparative Institutional Analysis of the Chinese Opera Sectors in Mainland China and Hong Kong

The study examines how the revitalisation of traditional culture takes different forms in two societies that shared identical cultural root yet underwent dissimilar paths of social development. It zeros in on the divergent developments of Chinese opera in mainland China and Hong Kong, which have experienced similar tensions that arise from competing interpretations of their traditions but have elicited different patterns of cultural hybridisation in their Chinese opera sector.
