Asiya Islam, PhD Candidate from the Department of Sociology features in 'This Cambridge Life' discussing the challenges facing India's aspiring young women.

Raised as an atheist in a predominantly Muslim town and former student at a Catholic school, Asiya Islam’s experience of India’s complex society gives her a strong foundation for research into the lives of young urban women in India whose ambitions are constrained by societal expectations.

Supervised by Dr Manali Desai, Asiya's PhD research explores the gendered politics of class formation in urban India, specifically addressing the under-exploration of gender in class analysis and the lack of attention to the politics of 'becoming' middle class. Her research takes a ground-up approach by seeking women’s narratives about their identities and aspirations at the interconnected sites of family, work and leisure.
