27 October 2017
Organised by Dr Jeff Miley and Dr David Lane, faculty members of the Department of Sociology, University of Cambridge, the conference brought together experts on state socialism, social and political history of the USSR, gender, imperialism, nationalism, racism, and British-Russian cultural relations.
Participants discussed the economic, social, and cultural impact of the October Revolution both domestically and internationally, and its role as the prelude to the socialist revolution on a European scale. Research presentations also covered the themes of women's representation in Russian revolutionary art, perceptions of October in cartoons and articles in the British press in the 1930s, and the legacy of the revolution in the Indian subcontinent and in Africa. The event concluded with the discussion of the relevance of the October Revolution of 1917 to the present time.
