Department of Sociology

An update from the Sociology Green Team

The Sociology Green Team held their bi-termly meeting this week with a great deal of interesting discussion about departmental happenings. The first item on the agenda was the brown bag lunches for next term- make your lunch at home, bring it into work and eat it with a nice bunch of people! The dates for the Lent term brown bag events are- 2nd May, 30th May and 20th June from 1pm in the Sociology Tea Room.

Cambridge University Counselling Service have initiated a pen recycling service (in conjunction with Terracycle), so from next week onwards, there will be a BIG PINK BIN in the entrance to the Sociology Department for the disposal of any old pens.

In order to keep the heating costs down, the Department will be installing timers on some of the radiators- these will keep the radiators on for four hours at a time, meaning we can control our energy output, particularly handy on warm summer days, when we don’t really need to be burning all that carbon! If you do happen to feel cold in the Sociology building, there are some blankets in the main office that can be used- all blankets/oversized warm jumper contributions are welcome.

After some cost-benefit analysis, we have also decided to replace our traditional disposable/bottled methods of water distribution in meetings for reusable cups and jugs- yes it will mean some washing up, but it will also save the Department some money and help the environment in the process!

This week we have been conducting a stationery amnesty, with multiple folders being reclaimed for later use- it looks like we won’t need to shop for stationary for a while!

Next month, our Green Team champions will be submitting an application for the Bronze and Silver Green Award- wish us luck!

Also… April is Spotlight on Travel month- if possible, why not swap the car for public transport, a bike or your feet for a day… you never know, it might be fun!
