Department of Sociology

Dr Gavin Stephenson

Congratulations to Gavin Stevenson who has received a certificate of commendation from the Cambridge Centre for Teaching and Learning in this year’s Outstanding Student Contribution to Education Award (OSCEAs)!

It comes as no surprise to the Department that Gavin received this commendation as he has won the Department of Sociology Supervisor Award two years running. Gavin was commended in particular for his inclusive practice, with an excerpt from his nomination reading:

"Gavin is loved by his students, not only because of the encouraging, attentive way he helps them reach their full potential, but also because he does so with sensitivity and awareness to their needs as learners. Gavin invests a lot of time making his subject approachable, relevant and meaningful for today's world; he uses real world examples to appeal to a broad range of students, in full awareness of the different social, cultural and national backgrounds that they have come from. He often goes far beyond what is expected of supervisors, regularly meeting with students in distress, for instance, or taking time to work through difficult parts of the syllabus with individual students."

The department would like to congratulate Gavin on his nomination and commendation, and thank him for the dedication he shows his students and the energy he puts into his role!
