Department of Sociology

We are delighted to announce that Gavin Stevenson, PhD candidate, has won the 2016-17 Supervisor Award!

At the beginning of June, the department announced the first ever Supervisor Award for staff and students who had supervised our undergraduate students. Students from across the HSPS Tripos were asked to nominate their supervisor for this exciting new award; we received nominations from around 40 students.

Students were asked to evaluate their supervisors’ based on criteria such as organisation, communication and essay support and were invited to leave comments. Having considered the submissions, Gavin was the obvious winner, with 10 nominations. He will receive a £100 prize.

Gavin was an amazing supervisor. He was incredibly understanding and supportive and helped make the most complex topics seem simple. He was willing to go above and beyond for his students and spent so much of his own time supporting me...

Sociology Student, University of Cambridge

Gavin is currently in the second year of his ESRC funded research, which focuses on the sociology of emotion. His research attempts to begin to map out an area with scarce literature and develop conceptual, theoretical and methodological tools to research the phenomenon and feeling of being offended. Gavin is a member of the Gender Research Group and Race Research Group in the Department of Sociology, he is also involved in outreach and widening participation work across the University and teaches about the “Representations of Gender and Sexuality in the Media and Popular Culture”.

Other supervisors who were strong contenders for the award included Lecturer in Social Sciences- Robbie Duschinsky and PhD candidates- Peter J. Roberts, Ali Meghji and Evangelos Georgas. Congratulations to all!
