Her: next film screening on 22 February

Wednesday 22/2 at 6pm, Sociology Seminar Room: Soc 7 screening of ‘Her’

Dir. Spike Jonze, 2013, USA, 2h06, starring Joaquin Phoenix (Theodore Twombly), Scarlett Johansson (Samantha), Rooney Mara (Catherine) and others

After separating from his wife Catherine, Theodore decides to purchase the AI operating system OS1. It is advertised with the line ‘It is not just an operating system, it’s a consciousness.’ Theodore chooses the OS1 to be female and it gets the name Samantha. Their relationship grows increasingly stronger and eventually Theodore falls in love with Samantha. But which kind of relationship can he have with this OS1? And does the AI eventually not outpace humans? These and other questions are addressed in this award-winning movie. As such, it is highly relevant for us studying digital media in relation to interpersonal relationships, smart homes, personal assistants and privacy. After the screening we will have a short discussion on these and other issues.

Drinks and nibbles will be provided, all welcome!
