The Social Codes of Tech Workers: Book Launch

Join us for the launch of The Social Codes of Tech Workers, a new book by Dr Robert Dorschel that examines how the coders and engineers who build our digital worlds think, work, and live. 

While the current debate often fixates on tech entrepreneurs or precarious gig workers, this book turns to the middle-class professionals operating behind the scenes of digital capitalism. Drawing on over 50 interviews and discourse analytical research in the US and Germany, Dorschel reveals how tech workers cultivate a return of social critique, hybrid professional identities, and ambivalent lifestyles. 

Dorschel locates tech workers as caught between a spirit of emancipation and yet another spirit of capitalism, resulting in their contradictory reconfiguration of the middle-class ideal of the entrepreneurial self.

In this event, Dr Dorschel will introduce the book’s core insights before a discussion with Professor Caroline Bassett and Professor Gina Neff, followed by audience Q&A. The event will be moderated by Dr Alex Wood. Drinks and snacks will be available afterwards. All are welcome.
