Department of Sociology

During the pandemic, the Sociology department is open on a limited basis to PhD students and staff booked onto the desk rota.

UPDATE: Please note that the desk rota will not be issued during the national lockdown period. Those needing to work in the department for exceptional reasons should contact the Departmental Administrator.

In order to reduce the number of people on site as far as possible, undergraduate and MPhil students are not permitted to enter the departmental premises at the current time. The Department recommends PhD students and staff work from home as much as possible, but we also understand that many of you cannot do so or are not as productive at home. We are trying to be as accommodating as possible within the limits of what is safe.

At present, the only PhD students and staff permitted to enter the department are those named in the new "desk rota". The desk rota will be circulated via email each Friday. To add your name to the rota, please email the Departmental Secretary, Ms Jolanda Aldis Clarke, with:

  1. A completed fire safety certificate (training link)
  2. A completed declaration form
  3. Which days of the week you would like to have a desk booked

You will then be added to the rota for the week following our receipt of your certificate and declaration. Once you receive the rota, please make a note of the desk number(s) you have been randomly allocated (see map).

If you have changed your mind about which days you would like to be in the department, or if you appear on the rota and do not wish to use a desk in the department on that day, please contact Jolanda so that your desk can be reallocated to someone else.

Finally, if you are a member of staff or a postdoc, please sign up for an individual 'Return to Work conversation' with the Head of Department by emailing:

Please remember:

  • Read and follow the protocols set out in the ‘Return to the Workplace Pack’ (download).
  • Only use your allocated desk, and only between the hours of 8:30am and 5pm.
  • A mask or other face covering must be worn at all times when in the department.
  • Do not leave any belongings on desks nor in the kitchen of the department. The cleaners are working hard to meet the sanitising requirements each day.
  • Do not enter the department if your name does not appear on the rota or if you have not had previous authorisation.
  • Do not use the departmental address for personal deliveries.

Thank you for your patience, understanding and cooperation.
