Department of Sociology

Research in Sociology at Cambridge

All the sociologists in Cambridge are very active in research and maintain strong publication records. Sociology is an integral part of a large social science research base in Cambridge where multiple forms of cross-departmental and interdisciplinary collaboration are actively encouraged and supported.  As a Department, we are committed to theoretically strong, empirically oriented research. The Department has a number of research priorities which provide a flexible framework for our research activity while at the same time allowing individual researchers the scope to pursue their own interests. The research activity of the Department is currently organized into the following five groups:

* Social Theory

* Economic and Political Sociology

* Media, Culture and New Technologies

* Gender, Reproduction and Family Life

* Public Health and Biomedicine

In each of these areas we have several members of staff developing research projects and managing research groups which consist of both graduate students and post-doctoral researchers.

Full details of the current research interests of individual members of staff can be found by following the links in the Members of the Department pages.

Many of the research projects in the Department are funded by grants from the major research councils and funding bodies. Recent awards held by members of the Department include the following:

* ESRC Priority Network on Gender Inequalities in Production and Reproduction (GeNet), directed by Professor Scott (£3.3 million)

* ERC Advanced Investigator Award on Privatisation and Mortality in Post-Communism, directed by Professor King (£2.8 million)

* Wellcome Senior Investigator Award on Histories and Cultures of In Vitro Fertilisation, directed by Professor Franklin (£1 million)
