Report by the Head of the Department

In July Professor Bryan Turner was elected to the Professorship of Sociology. Bryan, who is currently Dean of Social Sciences at Deakin University, Australia, will be taking up the Chair in November. Our other appointment during the year was of Dr David Runciman to an assistant lectureship in Political Theory. David has been a Research Fellow at Trinity College. Three members of staff are leaving us. In March Dr Gerard Evans retired on health grounds. Gerard, who has been responsible for teaching American politics, has been dogged by ill health for some time. Mr Ray Jobling has resigned his lectureship in Sociology to take up a full-time position as Senior Tutor in St John’s College. His responsibility has been teaching in medical sociology. Dr Colin Fraser has retired from his lectureship in Psychology. He will be continuing as Senior Tutor of Churchill College on a part-time basis. We send all three our best wishes in their new endeavours.

We congratulate Geoffrey Hawthorn who has been given a Personal Chair in International Politics and Christel Lane who has a Readership in Economic Politics.

The whole Department was shocked by the sudden death, on 12 June, of Mrs Brenda Young our General Board Administrative Officer. Brenda’s quiet efficiency and warm humanity endeared her to all of us and she will be sadly missed. We are very grateful to Jean Margrie who has taken over temporarily as our Administrative Officer.

Easter brought the delivery of the Report of the General Board Review Committee. Reassuringly, the main thrust of the Report’s recommendations followed the lines of development we already had begun. Central to these are a restructuring of our Tripos teaching to make it more progressive over the three years and to draw more strongly on our research specialities in the final year of teaching and to strengthen our research through developing a stronger infrastructure of support. It has not been the easiest experience having a Committee of distinguished academics examine all aspects of our operation in considerable detail. But the view from outside has provided an invaluable perspective on our activities and much of our energies over the coming year will be concerned with carrying through plans for the future in the light of its recommendations.

The Review Report placed emphasis on our links both in teaching and in research across the University. Given the steady state assumption that underlies our future planning, closer collaboration with other Faculties provides an obvious way forward - our growth is likely to be more lateral than vertical. One move in this direction has been the planning of a new research centre concerned with the study of ageing which is being set up with the involvement of colleagues from several Faculties across the University. But given that the University has just embarked on a round of cuts in order to finance improved performance related pay and promotion prospects for staff, these are challenging times to undertake new developments.

An innovation that has now become established in the Department has been research days. These have proved to be very successful occasions on which we inform each other about the very diverse research that is carried out within the Faculty and discuss research issues.

The Politics, Psychology, Sociology and International Studies Faculty Library

The usage of the Politics, Psychology, Sociology and International Studies Library continues to increase. During the year 1997-1998 the number of lendings was 31,918. The Social and Political Sciences (now PPSIS) Library spent £24,802 on the purchase of 1,308 titles. A shelf check was completed over the long vacation, and the number of losses for a two-year period was 56 volumes.

The Library is grateful for the 70 donations and the grants received from the Smuts Memorial Fund (£515) and the Development Studies Fund (£600) which enabled the Library to allocate more resources to its collection of books in the fields of Commonwealth Studies and Development Studies.

The courses attended by the Library Staff to enable them to improve standards of services offered in the Library include:

- ATHENS authentification and Electronic Information Services update

- What’s new on the WWW, Web search engines and Web Interface to the University Library Catalogue

- Electronic Information Services for the Social Sciences

- Year 2000 issues for Librarians

- Managing and Networking CD-Roms

- Introduction to UNIX

- HTML for Beginners

Barbara Parr and Wendy Sawford represent the SPS Library on the SPS Faculty Web Working Party. Ms Macek’s post of Librarian was upgraded to Grade B in January 1998. Ms Jenni Steers left to take up a Library post at King’s College Library. Mr Henry Pipe was appointed to the CS2 post in July 1998.
